Briefly Noted: 3 Traffic Lights Will Yield to Stop Signs
(News)
Traffic lights at three city intersections will be removed as unnecessary under state guidelines.
City council last week approved the replacement of stoplights with stop signs at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Market Street; Shaw Avenue and Locust Street; and Bailie and Evans avenues.
Sixth and Market and Bailie and Evans will become four-way stops, while only cars traveling north on Locust will be required to stop at Shaw Avenue.
According to a memo to council from police Lt. Dennis Lopretto, the intersections don't justify traffic lights under state Department of Transportation guidelines.

Meanwhile, a new traffic signal is in operation on Route 48 at Marshall Drive Extension. Dedicated last month, the long-awaited extension is designed to ease access to the city's Haler Heights section, a residential neighborhood that's also home to Serra Catholic High School.
Since the 1960s, access to Marshall Drive from Route 48 has been from Old Long Run Road, which entered Route 48 at two blind intersections. City officials say the intersections led to several serious accidents every year.
The north entrance to Old Long Run Road has now been abandoned.
Extending Marshall Drive to Route 48 has created a new commercial parcel of about six acres just south of Tom Clark Chevrolet. Several parties, including chain restaurants, have expressed interest in that property, officials say. The land is currently owned by Tom Clark Chevrolet.
