Several road construction projects in the Steel Valley area are affecting local motorists who visit Kennywood and Century III Mall, or who commute to Pittsburgh.

Repairs to a bridge on Route 837 near Kennywood are expected to continue through June, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation announced.

Crews are conducting structural repairs and replacing expansion dams to the bridge, said Jim Struzzi of PennDOT District 11. Traffic will be restricted to a single lane in each direction nightly from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. weeknights through June 29.

The restrictions will be in effect between Herman Avenue in Duquesne and Hoffman Boulevard in West Mifflin. The work is being done by Lone Pine Construction of Washington County, Struzzi said.

Meanwhile, crews are also working on two areas on Route 885 in West Mifflin and Pittsburgh. On Monday, crews began applying protective sealants to two overpasses near the Glenwood Bridge.

Single-lane closures are occurring in both directions, as needed, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through May 31, Struzzi said. The extended lane closures are necessary so that the sealants can dry properly. Restrictions will be coordinated to minimize impacts on rush hour traffic, Struzzi said.

The bridge improvement projects are included in an $8.1 million contract with Swank Associated Companies, Inc. of New Kensington for improvements on several bridges in Allegheny County.

Near Community College of Allegheny County's South Campus, crews have begun a $1.9 million project to repave and improve Route 885.

The project includes new pavement, guiderails, signs and traffic signals; upgraded drainage systems; and other improvements on a 1-mile stretch of the road, which connects to Lebanon Church Road near Century III Mall.

The prime contractor is A. Folino Construction of Oakmont, Struzzi said. Work will continue through November. One lane will remain open on each direction throughout the project.
