Briefly Noted: Firefighters Raise Money, Awareness

Category: Announcements || By An Editor

McKeesport firefighter Jeff Tomovcsik and Mayor Michael Cherepko display one of the pink T-shirts being sold this month by McKeesport Firefighters Local Union 10.

All proceeds benefit the McKeesport-based Kristy Lasch Miracle Foundation. Shirts are $10 for children's sizes and $15 and up for adults, and can be purchased through the union's website, or from McKeesport firefighters.

Lasch was a city native and 1996 Serra Catholic High School graduate who died in 2004 after two bouts with cancer.

City firefighters wear the shirts while on duty during October, which since 1985 has been designated National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by the American Cancer Society.

Cherepko thanked the fire department for making breast cancer awareness an annual cause.

"One thing I think we all have in common is that cancer has touched all of our lives in one way or another," he said. The yearly campaign by city firefighters provides a reminder for everyone "to remember those who lost the battle, and to celebrate the survivors who are still here," Cherepko said.
