Terrific cartoon! Unfortunately, given our tight budget, we can’t afford to change all those signs …
The illustrious Senator Vincent Fumo (D-Indicted) was absolutely charming and relaxed when he spoke at the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association (PNA) Government Affairs Conference this past Wednesday, January 31. Referring to the current budget, he noted that there was very little room for adjustments, given that most of it was allocated for mandates and entitlements. If I recall correctly, he jovially offered to trade places with any of the newspaper reporters who thought they could do a better job.
Drafting a budget for an entity the size of the State of Pennsylvania would be a daunting job for most of us — ever try to read one of those things? I didn’t expect much of Governor Rendell in his second term, but he has still managed to disappoint me. (By the way, a big thanks to the Republican Party for providing such a politically strong alternative this past November.) As a second term Governor, Rendell could have taken a leadership position more in tune with the mood of an electorate still stung by the attempted Legislative pay increase. I guess his success cutting costs when he was the Mayor of a near-bankrupt Philadelphia was a fluke.
Exhorbitant state employee bonuses, walking around money, loosely regulated legislative per diems, the newly created position of CEO of the PLCB, etc. — are we to believe that Senator Fumo is correct?
