There's live music today at the Renzie Park bandshell, starting at noon, and the fireworks go off at sundown. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket.
Before the fireworks and after the hot dogs, you may want to read the story behind John Trumbull's 1817 painting "The Declaration of Independence."
Or read a meditation on the meaning of the Declaration of Independence by E.J. Dionne of the Washington Post.
And keep an eye out for tigers wearing powdered wigs.
I can think of at least one feline who thinks she runs her household. (Her “mommy” and the strange fellow who occasionally feeds her notwithstanding.) However, she hasn’t insisted (yet) on going to her hometown council meetings where she could speak out about the feral cats that roam her neighborhood. Still, the other night, she stood bravely on her back porch, as the rockets’ red glare (of fireworks that I do not believe were authorized by that council) was accompanied by occasional showers of sparks on local rooftops. Drives the two humans in her house nuts but definitely would be missed.
