Ominous or Ridiculous?

Category: General Nonsense || By

John Barna photo

Photographer John Barna snapped this photo of a vulture perched on the Peoples Building earlier this week.

"I don't know if it's an omen about the building or McKeesport or what," he says. "I leave it up to you to supply an appropriate acerbic witticism!"

John, it's not an omen. The explanation is simple: The Bluebird of Happiness had the day off, and the Vulture of Unease was filling in.

Either that, or it was the day my car broke down and had to be pushed out of the middle of Lysle Boulevard. (On second thought, it was raining that day, so that couldn't have been it.)

If the swallows return to San Juan Capistrano each year, and the buzzards return to Hinckley, why shouldn't vultures come to McKeesport?

And most of the vultures who visit McKeesport become Section 8 landlords. (Rimshot!)

OK, smart guys and gals. Why was this vulture watching the intersection of Fifth and Walnut?

Let’s see … the New York owners of that building do not appear to have drawn any tenants, the Ligonier businessman who owns the venture across Lysle Boulevard hasn’t moved ahead on a reported expansion into the old millsite, we can add at least one nearby business that appears to have shut down and no further activity on that strip mall that took out half the Sinclair Street garage, and the most activity you ever see around the old Lysle Boulevard parking garage is when that union shows up to protest work going on in the old millsite. I think the vulture was surveying all he saw and thinking “PARTY!” But what do I know?

jason,

with the election and all, i forgot to mention that i am working with the LIM family that owns the People’s Union national bank Building to find them tenants and restore the building to the hub of our downtown as it should be. We should get together and discuss a marketing and promotion strategy to assist them.

Best,

Paul

I am actually showing the first floor space of the bldg. to an eager potential tenant this Wednesday! Gotta go clean!

Seriously, I understand that 12,000 cars a day pass the Bldg on Walnut St. Didn’t you have a number for those that pass on Lysle? That would be valuable marketing information!

Please respond and drop me an email ( sluggo@paulshelly.com ) with any such info you have.

Thanks!
