The man identified as the suspect in an hostage situation at Pittsburgh's Gateway Center reportedly has a criminal record in McKeesport.
Pittsburgh police have identified Klein Michael Thaxton, 22, as the suspect accused of taking a hostage at an insurance brokerage on the 16th floor of 3 Gateway Center. The man claims to be armed with a gun and a bomb, according to Pittsburgh police, who are negotiating with him.
According to Allegheny County court records and published reports, Thaxton was arrested last year by city police and University of Pittsburgh police in connection with a carjacking on July 18, 2011 at the BP Food Mart on Lysle Boulevard.
Thaxton was arrested early on July 19, 2011, in Pittsburgh's Uptown neighborhood after a chase that took him through several communities, according to published reports.
City police charged Thaxton with robbery, simple assault and receiving stolen property, while University of Pittsburgh police charged him with receiving stolen property, reckless endangerment, fleeing police and a variety of moving violations.
Thaxton pled guilty to those charges before county Common Pleas Court Judge John Zottola on Jan. 11 of this year and was sentenced to six to 12 months in the Allegheny County Jail, plus three years' probation, court records indicate.
Several news outlets are reporting that Thaxton has a Facebook page. The Facebook page identified as Thaxton's says that he attended McKeesport Area High School; Pittsburgh's Carrick and Schenley high schools; and Triangle Tech.
